After a rocket attack by the Taliban killed two soldiers in his battalion, he was inspired to create an app that would prevent similar losses from occurring in the future. Springer conceived the idea for the app while on his third tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Springer, a former Battalion Fire Support Officer in the 101st Airborne Division. The app allows includes features designed to make its use less conspicuous, such as a red-light user interface which conceals light from the phone's screen at night. Waypoint and location data can be shared via Facebook, text and email. Information gathered by the app can be sent to a tactical operations center, where a decision is made to conduct an airstrike or provide medical evacuation to wounded troops. It is also used in close combat and close air support operations. The app is used to direct mortar and artillery fire. The app allows users to pinpoint enemy fire and identify targets using their mobile phone's camera, the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) and the GPS. The app is primarily designed to assist in identifying targets, pinpointing enemy fire and mapping waypoints. Tactical Nav (stylized as Tactical NAV) is a location-based tracking app designed for use by military personnel. ![]()

Meyer writes: “When interacting with someone from another culture, try to watch more, listen more, and speak less. It is only when you start to identify what is typical in your culture, but different from others, that you can begin to open a dialogue of sharing, learning, and ultimately understanding.”īoth The Culture Map and Riding the Waves of Culture have frameworks that can help put language to our cultures. Meyer writes: “The way we are conditioned to see the world in our own culture seems so completely obvious and commonplace that it is difficult to imagine that another culture might do things differently. Make an effort to try to understand our own cultural assumptions. It is this relative positioning that determines how people view one another.”Ī simple way to think about this: The person who shows up two minutes late to a meeting often believes they are on time, and they believe that the person who shows up two minutes after them is incredibly rude.īecause these cross-cultural differences are often subconscious, the solution set is not obvious or easy. She writes: “The point here is that, when examining how people from different cultures relate to one another, what matters is not the absolute position of either culture on the scale but rather the relative position of the two cultures. In The Culture Map, INSEAD professor Erin Meyer explains that even if we have the language to describe our culture, we still hold our own experience as the norm. Try in the US or the Netherlands to raise the question of why people are equal and you will see what we mean.” It might lead to deeper insights, but it also might provoke annoyance. When you question basic assumptions, you are asking questions that have never been asked before. Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner write: “The best way to test if something is a basic assumption is to note if the question provokes confusion or irritation. Much like a fish doesn't see water, we often fail to see core assumptions about, say, the best way to frame an argument or the proper relationships between people in hierarchies. The other problem is that it’s hard to see our own cultural beliefs. The authors write: “Rather than there being ‘one best way of organizing,’ there are several ways, some much more culturally appropriate and effective than others, but all of them giving international managers additional strings to their bow if they are willing and able to clarify the reactions of foreign cultures.” So even business concepts that have robust research grounding may cause issues if we overinterpret their relevance across different contexts. ![]() Part of the challenge, as Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner articulate, is that the business landscape is dominated by American and Western European companies, the business literature is dominated by English-speaking professors and gurus, and the top consulting firms-though global today-were born and developed their versions of “best practice” in the U.S. What’s not obvious in practice is knowing whether our “objective” beliefs about the “right” way to do things are, in fact, objective or right. Their main point, as one of my business school professors put it, is: “Different countries are different.” (That then became a running joke among our class.) Riding the Waves of Culture by Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner is about how this plays out across country cultures. ![]() Basically, even if we think we’re looking at or talking about the same thing, we may have different perceptions because of our different personalities, experiences, and upbringings. I thought that was a good analogy for how we interact with others within and across organizations. “And even if that round red Coca-Cola sign with the white name in the middle is actually shown so that everyone focuses on the same red, each will receive the same projection on his retina, but no one can be sure whether each has the same perception.” And no one can be sure that he has found the precise red shade. “Even if all the listeners have hundreds of reds in front of them from which to choose the Coca-Cola red, they will again select quite different colors. “Even when a certain color is specified which all listeners have seen innumerable times-such as the red of the Coca-Cola signs which is the same red all over the country-they will still think of many different reds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different. “If one says ‘Red’ (the name of a color) and there are 50 people listening, it can be expected that there will be 50 reds in their minds. The first chapter of Josef Albers’ Interaction of Color contains the following passage: ![]() ![]() Other SBC schools already teach message-preparation classes for women. … The study of Scripture and the love of theology can’t be limited to just one of the two genders.” “Women who are complementarian in conviction want to in the proper place with the proper methodology. “Sometimes complementarian institutions and pastors act a little bit out of fear that if they equip women, then women will necessarily take on a role that God has not given them. ![]() 12:11)-to both men and women (Acts 2:17)-for the common good of the church. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts as he wills (1 Cor. The school, like fellow Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) institutions, ascribes to the Baptist Faith and Message, which limits the office of pastor to qualified men, while affirming that “both men and women are gifted for service in the church.” “If that’s what the women in the class wanted, they wouldn’t be at Southern.” “A few radical fringe complementarians say, ‘Oh, look! Southern Baptists are training women pastors!’” York said. Many want to serve at their local church, some want to teach in the academy, but none had ambitions for pulpit ministry. All said they wanted to know how to study God’s Word more deeply. Women at Southern Seminary and several other complementarian programs had similar motivations for learning to teach the Bible. Kahoun attends seminary to strengthen her ability to serve the local church, not through vocational ministry but as an equipped volunteer. Hershael York teaches Biblical Exposition for Women at Southern Seminary. For decades, York’s male-only preaching class has helped prepare pastors to preach. Male and female students in SBTS’s graduate programs can take Christian Teaching, which includes how to design an instructional plan for teaching the Bible and other matters of Christian doctrine and living. “Having a good hermeneutic, solid exegesis, and putting in a form people can engage and apply is the same preparation process whether you are a man in the pulpit or a woman teaching a Sunday school class.” “God is raising up women with burdens to be equipped to teach,” said Hershael York, dean of the school of theology at SBTS and a preaching professor who teaches the newly formed class. The class is the first of its kind ever since the Conservative Resurgence in the 1990s, the seminary has made a distinction between preaching classes for men and teaching classes that are open to women. This semester, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) started offering Biblical Exposition for Women. ![]() ![]() So more programs are training women to teach with their own versions of the preaching classes that have long been reserved for men.
